SCOSS selects Make Data Count as infrastructure essential to open science

We are thrilled to share that Make Data Count has been selected by SCOSS as essential open infrastructure for participation in its next funding cycle. 

SCOSS (the Global Sustainability Coalition for Open Science Services) is a network of organizations that has as its goal to identify non-commercial services essential to open science, and to make qualified recommendations on which of this infrastructure should be considered for crowdfunding-style funding support.

Over the last ten years, Make Data Count has driven open infrastructure to collect and share data usage measures, standards to contextualize data metrics, and outreach to promote recognition of data as primary outputs. We are delighted by SCOSS’ recognition that the tools, frameworks and practices developed by Make Data Count constitute critical infrastructure for the community. 

Make Data Count is committed to continuing our work to help the community meaningfully evaluate how data are being used, and in turn, understand how data advance research progress and address societal needs. Through our current projects, we are working to scale the data citations and normalized counts of data usage available to the community. We are also driving collaboration to provide data usage creators and evaluators with additional resources to support the responsible evaluation of data usage and impact.

Through SCOSS, organizations can provide financial support to Make Data Count so that we can invest in the further development of infrastructure for tracking data usage, and pursue outreach to global communities about data-evaluation practices. Through this support, we will continue work toward a long-term sustainability model for Make Data Count. SCOSS also provides a unique opportunity to engage with libraries and institutions, critical constituents in open data stewardship.

Following SCOSS’ rigorous selection process, we are joining the current cohort along with African Journals Online (AJOL), Episciences, and SciPost. Participants in prior SCOSS cycles include ROR, OpenCitations and other groups delivering important open scholarly infrastructure.
