New release for the Data Citation Corpus

The third release of the Data Citation Corpus incorporates data citations from the Aligning Science Across Parkinson’s (ASAP) initiative and enhancements to organization information.

We are pleased to share a new release for the Data Citation Corpus. This latest release includes new data citations from the funder, Aligning Science Across Parkinson’s (ASAP), as well as metadata enhancements for organization information. The data file is available on Zenodo.

A leader in open science policies, ASAP requires that all research outputs underlying publications, including datasets, code, protocols, and key lab materials, must be shared via a community-recognized repository and have a DOI or another persistent identifier. In addition, through a partnership with DataSeer, ASAP has processes in place to monitor compliance with these policies, through which they identify connections between research outputs and publications (journal articles and preprints). A description of ASAP’s process is provided in Dumanis et al. and Cobb-Lewis et al. In order to increase the visibility of these citations, ASAP has contributed the dataset-article connections identified for ASAP-funded projects to the Data Citation Corpus, including datasets with both DOIs and accession numbers.

This contribution supports the goal of the Data Citation Corpus to provide an open central aggregate where the community can access citations to datasets. We are excited by this addition and invite other funders who may also be identifying data citations as part of their internal processes to get in touch to explore a collaboration.

In addition to the data citations from ASAP, the current release provides metadata enhancements for organization information. For the data citation records that include affiliation and funder metadata, we have disambiguated organization names with the Research Organization Registry (ROR), and the citation records now include the ROR name and ROR ID. This is a stepping stone in our work to facilitate insights for institutions and funders through the exploration of data citations. 

New data citations from DataCite Event Data created up to the end of 2024 are now available in the current data file. Documentation for the Data Citation Corpus and the current release is available on the Make Data Count website, and details for the updates and associated scripts are available in GitHub.

We are pursuing our engagement with potential contributors to the Data Citation Corpus as well as additional enhancements to the data-citation records, and look forward to sharing further updates on our work in the coming months.
